Advantages and Disadvantages of Rent Control

I talked with my roommate (Living SF) about controlling rent for the past week or two with Oregon law getting the subject raised again. I am well versed in proficient economics / business so I feel like I have a good understanding of how the rent works. She was under the impression that rent control helps everyone just hurts homeowners, meanwhile I have tried to argue that controlling rent can create supply and demand problems which could be more detrimental to the domestic housing market. Can anyone help to glean some good resources / articles / opinions about rent control? I can find some, but want a good source for this information as it is a hot topic here in San Francisco. Want to hear what everyone thinks good / bad, all that I found is quite market driven so it is sometimes difficult to relate too. I wanted to know what it mattered to think!
