"Lonely Star State" has become a coveted destination among New York and California residents.
With a housing market at reasonable prices and no state-level taxation, Texas has become home to more than a quarter million people from New York and California over the past decade. Beyond that, many countries are able to attract residents, the main thing is to escape the housing crisis and prices that are rising steadily.
In early November, negative immigration figures were published in California and New York that are worrying about state authorities. For example, close to 700 people chose to leave the Golden State during 2018.
Now an even more worrying picture emerges: New York, California and Illinois are losing population at a dizzying pace over the past decade: Between 2010 and 2019, these three states counted 3.2 million residents who chose to move to other states, compared to those who immigrated.
These three major states are by no means alone: 9 more reported negative immigration figures exceeding 100 people, according to official data released by the United States Census Bureau. York, California and Illinois.
Over the past decade, California's population has grown by more than two million people - a number that places the state in third place after Texas and Florida. New York saw a slight increase (from 19.5 million people to 19.54 million) and Illinois actually recorded a decrease of about 160 people during this period.
According to data from the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS), it is possible to see where those residents are moving to. For example, between 2011 and 2018, New York lost 205,220 residents to Florida. 149,494 residents chose to cross the Hudson and move to New Jersey, 77,656 chose to live in regenerating North Carolina, 61,695 chose the Golden State while 59,112 chose Texas as their new home.
California is also "bleeding" and losing residents on the right and left: 207,707 chose to move to Texas, 149,459 moved to Nevada, 114,229 to Washington State and 113,549 moved to Oregon. The next four states on the list are Arizona, Idaho, Utah and Colorado, so apart from Texas it can be seen that California residents prefer to continue living on the western side of the US.
One of the main reasons for New York and California residents is the cost of living, from the housing crisis to the high tax rates. In Texas and Nevada, however, residents are not required to pay local tax (they do pay federal).
