After a decade of population growth: New York has lost about 1,000 inhabitants.
** If the amount of immigrants who arrive in the city usually "covers" the number of residents who left, then this year probably did not happen. This is a significant issue because next year there will be a population count to help divide the federal budget and allocate members of Congress (the city is expected to lose two representatives).
About one million people live in New York City, but the Bureau of the US Census estimates that the population of New York has decreased by 8.4 in the year 40.
The fact that thousands have left the city hints at a slowdown in the city's massive expansion since 2010, but senior municipal officials are questioning the bureau's assessment and say it is a "guess" at best. They say if the population of New York is declining, the reason is the change in population counting methodology.
“Our entire team raises a lot of question marks about the numbers recognized and the form in which they were collected. Every measure we have seen in recent years has witnessed population growth, ”said New York Mayor Bill De Blasio.
The number of residents in the city is not a matter of pride, it has great significance: every ten years the projection is carried out by a population census, which will happen again during the next year. The number of residents in the city (and in the country as a whole) will decide on the number of members of Congress and the division of the federal budget. Currently, it is estimated that the city will lose two representatives in the House of Representatives.
In terms of numbers, 2017 included 8,438,271 residents in the city. This year, it is estimated, the figure will stand on 8,398,748 residents. By Queens, Queens lost the largest number of inhabitants with 18, followed by Brooklyn with 13,500, the Bronx with 7,500 and Manhattan, where a thousand residents abandoned.
The figures indicate that New York is in line with the regular population movement in the United States. Generally, more New Yorkers leave the city and move to other cities, but immigrants who arrive in the city maintain a positive balance. That's not what happened in the last year when 137 of the city's residents left it, compared to only 49 of the immigrants who chose to move to the city from foreign countries.
Joseph Salvo, a demographic expert at the New York City Planning Bureau, admitted that the rate of population growth has diminished, but he nevertheless disagrees with the final statement: "There is a very reasonable possibility that the population has not diminished at all. We think it is higher than 8.4 million, ”he said. This, he argues, is a change in the methodology of information collection. “Instead of asking people who were not born in the United States when they arrived in the country, the bureau decided to ask where they lived a year ago. It could have hurt the data, ”said Salvo.
